Obituary for Betty Louise Kelley (Richardson)

Betty Louise (Richardson) Kelley, age 68 of Martinsburg, WV passed away on Friday, August 9, 2019. She was born April 14, 1951 in Hominy Falls, WV to the late Opal (Cunningham) Richardson and Rev. Lee Roy Richardson.

Betty was the daughter of a Methodist minister and spent her childhood growing up and traveling to many counties in West Virginia. In January 1967, she married the late Edsel Kelley, Sr. and over the next 13 years they had three children together. Betty became a loving and extremely hard-working single mother and supported her family as a school bus driver for Fairfax County public schools. She loved each and every one of her students that she safely transported to/from school, often referring to them as “her kids”. Betty loved every moment of being a bus driver of nearly 30 years for Faifax County, it was her life’s calling. She even drove her own daughter to/from school on her bus, to see her off every day, with a smile and an “I love you”, as well as to keep a close eye on her.

Her retirement from Fairfax County was very bittersweet, as she physically had to retire, being a bus driver was her identity and was very sad to leave it behind. Betty was a devout Christian and loved the Lord with every thread of her being and was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in the Vienna, Virginia for over 40 years. Betty followed her daughter to Martinsburg West Virginia in 2010, where they each purchase their own home. She was so proud to be living the dream and becoming a homeowner, after many decades of hard work. Betty’s children and grandchildren were her life and they all helped to care for her in her later years. Betty will be sorely missed by all of her family and friends that loved her so dearly. She was a best friend to many, especially her children and was the best mother anyone could ask for. Her family was blessed to have her for 68 years and she is survived by her children, Joseph Kelley of Martinsburg, and Katie Campbell (husband Shuan) and their two children (her beloved grandchildren) Preston Lee, and Madison Jane, all of Martinsburg WV. She is also survived by her sisters Mary Jane Portis of Bethany, Oklahoma and Janet Boldman of Oklahoma. Betty is preceded in death by her parents, oldest son Edsel Kelley, Jr. and brother, Larry Richardson, Sr.

Betty’s service will be held at Otterbein United Methodist Church, 49 N. Queen Street, Martinsburg, WV. The family will receive friends at 12:00 PM until the time of service at 1:00 PM. Internment will be private.

Shelia Johnson

Betty was more then just a friend, she was like a younger sister, 4 years my jr. We talked all the time, and when her Son passed I talked, listen and prayed for her and with her, as she struggled very hard at his passing, . My love and prayers go out to her children, and all the family and friends that love and cared for her. I know you are with your son Edsall now so your mind and heart are at peace, RIP Betty, keep the party going up there until we meet again. God bless and keep you safe. All my love and hugs. Shelia.
