Obituary for Larry Allen Smith

On Monday, September 28, 2020, Larry “Randy” Allen Smith, 72, passed away suddenly in Hagerstown, MD after battling cancer.

Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Anne Harrison (nee Dare) and step-father Norman “Bucky” V. Harrison.

He was a loving father and grandfather and was survived by his daughter, Deborah Mowatt, his son Randy Smith (Jenny), his grandsons Samuel and Bayley Mowatt and his aunt, Joann Wines. In addition to his family, Larry will be remembered by his longtime friends: Jimmy M., Mike F., Joe R., Jeff B., and JR.

Larry was born in July of 1948 and served over 30 years as an HVAC technician for the Federal Government at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD and the Frederick County School District before retiring.

Larry was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He was an active member of the NRA, IWLA and enjoyed discussing politics and social issues with his friends and family.

Larry will forever be remembered in our hearts as a loving father, grandfather, and a loyal friend.

A private memorial celebration of his life will be held at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Lab Rescue LRCP, P.O. Box 1814, Annandale, VA 22003.

My heartfelt sympathy for all of Larry's family. Many of us used to visit Larry and fish in the Monocacy River across the street from his home. His front porch was the gathering place for us to talk politics, fishing and day-day happenings. Jeff Baumer, Mike Fitzgerald, Mark Miller, JR and I could frequently be seen with Larry on his porch. He was a Master storyteller. His stories would always bring a smile to your face or make you laugh out loud. In Larry's own words, we were his 'Homies'. Rest in peace my dear friend. You will be missed.

My condolences to Larry's family. I worked with Larry most of the 30 years with him at NIH. We had a close knit group of guys that would work together and help each other out. Tom Windsor, Gary Bailey, Joe Ryan, Sonny Lassak, J.R. Smith, Walt Zalewski, Jeff Baumer, Bruce Chambers, and many more. Me, Jeff Baumer, and Mike Fitzgerald would go over to Larry's place and visit and talk about politics, hunting, and Christianity. Larry was a good guy and will be missed by many.
